Why the HSK certificate is important for Chinese leaners

Updated: Jun 11, 2021

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is an international standardized test to assess the Chinese-language proficiency of non-native speakers (foreigners, Chinese people living overseas, and Chinese national minorities). In a way, it’s similar to the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), but with Mandarin as the language being tested.

Why take HSK?

The test is designed to help Chinese education institutions and companies evaluate the language level of non-native speakers. The HSK examines many of the most common words and grammatical structures that one will meet in both everyday and professional situations. Thus, preparing for this exam will allow a student to cover a wide range of useful material which will be immediately applicable in various situations.

1.Gain admissions into a Chinese University

If you are planning to study in China or pursue higher-level education, the HSK Test is a crucial examination. To be accepted in a Chinese university, you are required to know the basics as well as the advanced levels of Chinese because study visas are granted on the basis of Chinese-level proficiency. Depending on the major you would want to take, levels between 4-5 are required.

2. Increase your chances of obtaining a Chinese scholarship

A decent test HSK score might get you a scholarship for studying Chinese in China!

If you wish to choose your own major, you need to meet the three main criteria for Chinese scholarships. This includes outstanding academic performance, aggregate performance, and Chinese language aptitude (HSK written test score must be above 180 and HSKK oral ability test score must be above 75).

3. Better Knowledge Of The Culture

When you’re learning about the Chinese language, you also can’t help but learn more about their culture. In particular, what the different dos and don’ts are for those who plan on working in Chinese-speaking areas. Because of your fluency and proficiency, you’ll have insider knowledge of Chinese culture, something that other applicants likely won’t have.

4.Expand your business opportunities in China

If you are thinking about expanding to the Chinese market for personal, professional or business reasons, the HSK is definitely something for you. Even the English level of Chinese people is comparatively high in Asia, but Chinese people will be definitely thrilling if their business partner can speak some Chinese.

5.Increase job opportunity in a multinational company

If you’re a professional looking for employment in China. Even though it’s not a famous test among employers, it shows your dedication to learn about and be in China. That would be a bonus.

6. Achievement and motivation to learn Chinese

HSK level gives you a specific goal and framework to work with. This is especially important with language studies because having a specific goal in mind – such as passing the HSK test of the desired level – will keep you motivated on the long run. Even though this doesn’t directly tie into your career, your growth as an individual greatly impacts your professional life. Taking the HSK test is a personal challenge that not everyone can accomplish. By taking the exam and passing it, you’ll be giving yourself a huge confidence boost, which can lead you to pursue other goals and even more success.

7. Shows Your Resilience

Even if the job you are interested in does not require Chinese language abilities, you can impress your future employers with your passion for learning. Having certified skills outside of what’s relevant to your job shows that you are a self-starter and motivated individual. Who knows, even if Chinese isn’t directly relevant to your job now, your boss may shortlist you for opportunities when they find your multilingual profile comes in handy for a new portfolio.

8. Show your Chinese Language Proficiency

HSK “Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì 汉语水平考试” is one of the best ways to demonstrate your Chinese language proficiency.

HSK is an objective measurement of your Chinese level, so instead of saying, ‘Hey I studied Chinese for two years,’ you can instead say, ‘Hey I’ve passed HSK 4’ – which looks much better on your CV.
